Fifty Years in Review
The History of Sárvár as a Spa Destination
The journey to make Sárvár a spa destination has been a long one, starting with the discovery of thermal water and culminating in its recognition as a spa town. Over the past fifty years, the common goal of the city leaders and private investors has been to develop tourism in Sárvár. Thermal water has been part of Sárvár's life since 1961 when valuable water was discovered during oil drilling. Two types of water can be found in Sárvár: the water in the medical pools comes from a depth of 1200 meters at a temperature of 43°C, while the other water erupts from a depth of 2000 meters at a high temperature of 83°C. The latter contains important components such as sodium chloride, hydrogen carbonate, iodine, bromine, fluorine, and many trace elements.
Tourism based on thermal water began to thrive in the early 1980s. The existing bath and campsite received an average of 160,000 visitors annually. At that time, there was still a sports field at the current location of the spa. In 1983, the cornerstone of the Danubius Thermal Hotel was laid, and in 1985, it opened as part of Austrian-Hungarian tourism cooperation.
The Sárvár Medical and Wellness Spa opened its doors in 2002, further strengthening the city's position in the health tourism market and boosting its tourism. Uniquely in Hungary, in 2004, the spa became a member of the European Royal Spas Association due to its high-quality services. In April 2007, the spa received the EuropeSpa-Med quality award, and in 2008, the Hungarian Bath Association's Qualification Committee placed it in the highest, four-star category. In 2010, the spa's second phase was completed, turning the complex into a family-friendly bath. In 2011, the number of visitors reached 720,000, thanks to significant developments.
As a result of these significant developments, new hotels were established (VitalMed Hotel, Park Inn Hotel, Spirit Hotel), and many new guesthouses and apartments also opened. The expansion of accommodation capacity is evident, as in 2001, commercial accommodations had 26,000 guests, while in 2011, it reached 444,000, making Sárvár the 7th most visited town in Hungary.
By 2011, Sárvár had become eligible to be recognized as a spa town. Its natural characteristics, medical waters, and infrastructural developments made it an attractive destination for those seeking relaxation and healing. The green environment, rich flora, and friendly locals all contribute to a pleasant stay for visitors. Sárvár was officially recognized as a spa town in 2012.
